Ambassador Carlo Formosa Signed an Agreement with UNEP
The Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, signed an agreement on behalf of Italy with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to launch a €2 million project aimed at strengthening the energy resilience of Ukrainian cities.
The initiative, funded by Italy, aims to support Ukraine’s recovery by moving towards a more sustainable and decentralized energy system in accordance with the "Build Back Better" principle. The project will focus on improving efficiency and safety. The signing ceremony was attended by Roman Andarak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, representatives of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Kyiv, and UNEP officials.
“The project involves a detailed analysis of opportunities to integrate renewable energy sources into Ukraine’s energy system, focusing on assessing solar photovoltaic potential and exploring the development of microgrids to enhance the energy autonomy of cities. Advanced technological tools will be studied to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption, with the aim of creating a model for more sustainable urban energy planning,” explained Ambassador Formosa.
“One of the key aspects of the project is capacity building and technology transfer, engaging Italian and Ukrainian experts to develop local skills in sustainable energy management. In addition, the program will support the Ukrainian Government in developing long-term energy transition policies and attracting investments in the renewable energy sector,” added the Ambassador.
The project, developed in collaboration with UNEP, is part of Italy’s broader efforts to support Ukraine’s recovery and energy security. Italy has allocated €125 million for these efforts through joint initiatives and strategic cooperation with local and international institutions and partners.
